Swimming

Pupils at St. Andrew’s attend swimming lessons throughout Year 4. Pupils attend swimming lessons weekly throughout the whole academic year as part of their physical education. Our pupils attend lessons at Brighouse swimming pool. Each lesson lasts for 45 minutes.

Our pupils work towards achieving the National Curriculum objectives for swimming, in particular:

Children are assessed throughout the year. Certificates are presented to children who have passed the Starter Awards. This is provided through Calderdale Schools Swimming Service. Instructors working for Calderdale LA teach the children and they work towards Calderdale’s award programme.

See below for more information on how our pupils are assessed in swimming.

What percentage of your current Year 6 cohort use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]? 43%
What percentage of your current Year 6 cohort perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations? 43%
Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and sport premium to provide additional provision for swimming but this must be for activity over and above the national curriculum requirements. Have you used it in this way? Yes, additional Y5 swimming lessons (for our current Y6 pupils)
